Constructing an International Relations Theory for Small and Medium-Sized Countries: A CrossTemporal and Trans-Spacial Study of Asymmetrical Strategic Triangles
Yu-Shan Wu International Conference Hall, Humanities and Social Sciences Building (HSSB)

    Speaker: Yu-Shan Wu

    Title: Academician/Distinguished Research Fellow

    Language: Chinese

Description: Western international relations theories primarily focus on great power dynamics, often overlooking the position of small and medium-sized states, such as Taiwan. This research is based on the asymmetric strategic triangle model, examining how smaller nations navigate the realities of great power competition. The goal is to develop an international relations framework tailored to the needs of these states, aligning with global developments and Taiwan’s current strategic imperatives.

  • 10:05-10:40
Complexity Theory for Quantum Promise Problems
Kai-Min Chung International Conference Hall, Humanities and Social Sciences Building (HSSB)

    Speaker: Kai-Min Chung

    Title: Distinguished Research Fellow

    Language: Chinese

Description: This work develops a new complexity-theoretic framework for quantum-input decision problems—referred to as quantum promise problems—and demonstrates their fundamental differences from tranditional complexity theory. We establish complete problems, unconditional separations, and structural containments for a range of quantum promise complexity classes, and apply this framework to shed new light on quantum cryptography, property testing, and unitary synthesis.

  • 11:00-11:35
How to regenerate the just-right amount of tissue?
Chen-Hui Chen International Conference Hall, Humanities and Social Sciences Building (HSSB)

    Speaker: Chen-Hui Chen

    Title: Associate Research Fellow

    Language: Chinese

Description: Upon major injuries, zebrafish can regenerate complex tissues with extreme accuracy. Despite this robustness, the mechanisms that ensure the just-right amount of tissue regrowth remain little understood. Here, we present evidence and propose that insights from the zebrafish tailfin model could instruct strategies to enable complex tissue regeneration in animals that are less regenerative, such as mice and humans.

  • 11:35-12:10
Understanding Low Fertility Phenomenon in Taiwan
Yen-Hsin Alice Cheng International Conference Hall, Humanities and Social Sciences Building (HSSB)

    Speaker: Yen-Hsin Alice Cheng

    Title: Research Fellow

    Language: Chinese

Description: Total fertility rates have been lower than 1 child over the past years in Taiwan, which are among the lowest globally. Public understandings about the underlying causes are not always precise and relevant policies mis-targeted. This talk will explore the causes of low fertility and the life circumstances of young adults in Taiwan, along with the continuity and changes in family values and behaviors in recent years. Potential improvements in current policies will also be discussed.
