Why anthropology needs knowledge of neuroscience? A call for collaborations
Shuenn-Der Yu International Conference Hall, Humanities and Social Sciences Building (HSSB)

    Speaker: Shuenn-Der Yu

    Title: Research Fellow

    Language: Chinese

Description: Anthropologists’ constructions of culture often relate to human brain but in their days scholars seldom referred to brain science. By reviewing perspectives of social neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, embodiment, and neuroanthropology, this paper proposes how anthropologists may like to reconsider their concepts of culture and construct theories more compatible with contemporary knowledge.

Protein misfolding in neurodegenerative diseases: the cause and therapeutic potential
Yun-Ru Chen International Conference Hall, Humanities and Social Sciences Building (HSSB)

    Speaker: Yun-Ru Chen

    Title: Research Fellow/Deputy Director

    Language: Chinese

Description: Neurodegenerative diseases, often linked to aging, are driven largely by protein misfolding. This talk explores the origins and therapeutic potential of targeting misfolded proteins, using Alzheimer's and ALS as examples, and highlights pathological mechanisms uncovered in our research along with related drug development strategies.

  • 11:00-11:35
Nature as a great sculptor — a lesson from ferroptotic trigger waves
Sheng-Hong Chen International Conference Hall, Humanities and Social Sciences Building (HSSB)

    Speaker: Sheng-Hong Chen

    Title: Associate Research Fellow

    Language: Chinese

Description: Large-scale cell death is commonly observed in embryonic development and human aging diseases, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Our research shows that ferroptotic trigger waves are the key mechanism underlying large-scale cell death, providing a new paradigm for studying cell death events during embryonic development and human aging diseases.

  • 11:35-12:10
Exploring the hepatitis trilogy: from the perspective of causality
Yen-Tsung Huang International Conference Hall, Humanities and Social Sciences Building (HSSB)

    Speaker: Yen-Tsung Huang

    Title: Research Fellow

    Language: Chinese

Description: This study developed a causal mediation model to analyze the natural history of disease, focusing on how temporally ordered events mediate the mortality risk among patients with hepatitis B or C (hepatitis → cirrhosis → liver cancer → death). The results reveal distinct mechanisms of disease progression for hepatitis B and C.

    Description: Event Overview:
Achieving net-zero emissions is a critical long-term goal in combating climate change. However, recent IPCC reports and scientific findings suggest that mitigation alone is not enough—adaptation actions must proceed in parallel to effectively manage the risks and impacts of a rapidly changing climate.
This expert forum, held as part of the 2025 Academia Sinica Scientific Conference, brings together leading roles from academia, government, and civil society to address one of the most urgent challenges of our time: How can Taiwan accelerate and strengthen its climate adaptation efforts in the face of intensifying risks?
The forum will open with keynote remarks by Distinguished Research Fellow Dr. Huang-Hsiung Hsu, who will outline the scientific urgency and strategic necessity of adaptation in Taiwan’s climate agenda followed by Panel discussions.
