Language: Chinese
Description: Speaker: Dr. Li-chiao Wang (Senior Research Specialist and Director of Archives)
Taiwan Hsin Min Pao, the only newspaper published independently by the Taiwanese during the Japanese Colonial Period, was launched by young intellectuals who had learned from the newspaper publishing experiences of modern advanced countries. They used the newspaper as a medium for knowledge dissemination to promote political awakening and cultural enlightenment among Taiwanese people. The Archives of the Institute of Taiwan History at Academia Sinica is testing and applying mature digital and AI tools available in the market to establish a digital processing workflow for digital archives, text recognition, and Chinese translation, aiming to rapidly generate vast amounts of full-text historical materials that can be used for cross-language analysis and thematic research. Beyond completing the construction of a pre-war Taiwanese newspaper corpus, the cross-disciplinary collaboration and human-machine interaction experience can also contribute to developing a language model with distinctive features of Taiwan history. -
