Bitcoin and Blockchain

Chin-Yi Cyrus Chu

Academician/Distinguished Research Fellow, Institute of Economics

Before and after Trump’s election, Trump declared that the United States would accumulate one million bitcoins as part of its federal reserves. Bitcoin is built on blockchain technology—but what exactly is blockchain? Why does the price of bitcoin fluctuate so dramatically? How do economists regard bitcoin? What are some of the criticisms surrounding it? And can blockchain truly achieve "decentralization"? This lecture aims to address these questions.

Why Are Mushrooms Poetic in East Asian Cultures, and What Does This Teach Us

Siao-Chen Hu

Distinguished Research Fellow, Institute of Chinese Literature and Philosophy

The natural properties of mushrooms, or fungi, have been seen as possible answers to some of the world’s problems. But mushrooms are also cultural. They are celebrated for their flavor, yet can also be hallucinogenic. They carry emotional, historical, and religious associations, while also appearing as commodities. This talk explores how mushrooms are represented through the intertwined image of decay and life. It considers the ties between fungi, humans and the ecological world, and reflects on what mushroom life might teach us in an age shadowed by apocalyptic anxiety.

How to regenerate the just-right amount of tissue?

Chen-Hui Chen

Associate Research Fellow, Institute of Cellular and Organismic Biology

Upon major injuries, zebrafish can regenerate complex tissues with extreme accuracy. Despite this robustness, the mechanisms that ensure the just-right amount of tissue regrowth remain little understood. Here, we present evidence and propose that insights from the zebrafish tailfin model could instruct strategies to enable complex tissue regeneration in animals that are less regenerative, such as mice and humans.

AI and Digital Humanities: AI Topic Modeling of Republican Women’s Magazines

Institute of Modern History

This project examines the social survey columns in Republican-era women’s journals by integrating OCR and AI-based topic modeling techniques, aiming to explore the potential applications of AI in historical research. OCR is used to convert historical print materials into machine-readable text, while topic modeling helps identify semantic structures and thematic patterns across large volumes of data. Beyond efficient text processing, the project also investigates how gendered perspectives and writing practices contribute to the construction of knowledge frameworks. By incorporating AI into the textual analysis workflow, this study demonstrates new possibilities for historical interpretation in the age of AI and offers an empirical example at the intersection of digital humanities and gender history.

Eco-Evo-Devo: Looking into the interplay between form, function, genetic architecture, and interactions in an ever-changing environment

Institute of Cellular and Organismic Biology, Biodiversity Research Center

The diversity of life on Earth is huge. The domains of ecology, evolution, and evolutionary developmental biology (evo-devo) seek to catalog this diversity, understand interactions among species and with the environment, uncover the driving forces for such diversification, and determine the molecular basis for the development and evolution of phenotypic variation. This symposium will highlight recent discoveries made by our faculty at Academia Sinica in these three domains. These research advances often deploy, or even develop, new technologies and methods to solve difficult problems, and thus, sharing of these approaches may inspire ambitious new ideas in ecology, evolution, and evo-devo. This symposium includes two oral presentation sections and one poster section for discussion and social networking.

AI and Digital Humanities: The Pre-WWII World Travel Experiences of Taiwanese Islanders—Using Digital and AI tool to Transcribe and Translate Overseas Travel Accounts in the Newspaper Taiwan Hsin Min Pao

Institute of Taiwan History

Speaker: Dr. Li-chiao Wang (Senior Research Specialist and Director of Archives)

Taiwan Hsin Min Pao, the only newspaper published independently by the Taiwanese during the Japanese Colonial Period, was launched by young intellectuals who had learned from the newspaper publishing experiences of modern advanced countries. They used the newspaper as a medium for knowledge dissemination to promote political awakening and cultural enlightenment among Taiwanese people. The Archives of the Institute of Taiwan History at Academia Sinica is testing and applying mature digital and AI tools available in the market to establish a digital processing workflow for digital archives, text recognition, and Chinese translation, aiming to rapidly generate vast amounts of full-text historical materials that can be used for cross-language analysis and thematic research. Beyond completing the construction of a pre-war Taiwanese newspaper corpus, the cross-disciplinary collaboration and human-machine interaction experience can also contribute to developing a language model with distinctive features of Taiwan history.
